Top seed Nguyen Tien Minh moved to the semi-finals at the Viet Nam badminton Open at Phan Dinh Phung Gymnasium, HCM City.
Minh, the only remaining Vietnamese representative in the competition, overcame Japan's Kento Momota in straight sets 21-14, 21-18 to book a place in the last four.
Despite beating Momota in two sets it was not an easy game for Minh as the young Japanese produced a determined performance that forced Minh to up his game.
Minh will face his first real challenge in the last four when he plays fifth seed Sony Dwi Kuncoro of Indonesia. Kuncoro has won two of the three previous encounters between the two players.
In the other semi-final match, second seed Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka of Indonesia, who beat Taiwan's Chou Tien Chen in straight sets in the previous round, will meet Japanese sixth seed Takuma Ueda, who enjoyed an easy quarter-final win over India's Arvind Bhat.-VNS
