Wushu artists take home medals

HCM CITY — Vietnamese martial artists won a gold medal and two silver medals at the Asian Wushu Championships at Phu Tho Gymnasium in HCM City yesterday.

Nguyen Manh Quyen earned a gold medal in the men's gunshu event with a score of 9.72 points, followed by South Korea's Cho Seung-jae (9.68 points) and Chinese Macau's Jia Rui (9.67 points).

The two silver medals came from Hoang Thi Phuong Giang and Duong Thuy Vy.

Giang got 9.61 points to finish second in the women's daoshu event, just 0.07 point less than gold medallist Geng Xiao Ling of Hong Kong. Chai Fong Wei from Malaysia took third place with a score of 9.61 points.

In the women's jianshu event, Vy bagged a silver medal with a score of 9.67 points. Mainland China's Gu Xiu Hong scored 9.78 points to take the gold medal and Macau's Li Yi claimed a bronze medal with a score of 9.66 points.

On the second day on Wednesday, Vietnamese martial artists won two silver medals.

The first silver medal was won by Pham Quoc Khanh in the men's nanquan event with a score of 9. 64.

Wu Jie Long of China claimed the gold medal in the event with a score of 9.78 while Iranian Farshad Arabi received a bronze, scoring 9.63 points.

Tran Xuan Hiep won the day's second silver medal for the host nation when he brilliantly performed in the men's nandao event to score 9.70 points.

The gold medal went to Macau's Jia Rui with a score of 9.73 while Japanese Ichikizaki Daisuke claimed a bronze medal.

In other events contested in the day, Chinese martial artists showed their absolute dominations, winning three more gold medals.

Liu Xia had a nearly-perfect performance to win a gold medal in the women's changquan with a score of 9.82. Wei Hai Ling won a gold medal for China in the women's nanquan and Yu Meng Meng finished the day with another gold medal in the women's jian event.

On the first day of the championships that has been held for the first time in Viet Nam, Viet Nam's Nguyen Manh Quyen won a bronze medal in the men's taolu event with a score of 9.65.

China's Wang Xi and Japan's Ichikizaki Daisuke finished first and second with a score of 9.85 and 9.69, respectively.

The tournament will end on Saturday with finals both in men's and women's shanshou categories. — VNS
