HCM CITY — Song Lam Nghe An (SLNA) faces a do-or-die situation as it plays Kitchee of Hong Kong today in a Group F match of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup.
Although the match will be played at Vinh Stadium in the central province of Nghe An, giving SLNA the home advantage, the chances of winning and keeping their slight hopes alive are slim.
With just one point after three games, SLNA are at the bottom of Group F, five points behind the second team and eight points behind the leaders.
Winning today is not an easy task for coach Nguyen Huu Thang because Kitchee is a very strong team. They beat SLNA 2-0 one week ago at Hong Kong.
"Kitchee is the strongest team in the group, so we will try our best to play a good match against them," the former national defender said.
Thang said he had to rotate players as the club was competing in three competitions. Besides the AFC Cup, SLNA are still in contention for a V-League title and the National Cup at home.
The coach also said that the team was unlucky, especially in the match against Terengganu of Malaysia, because the players missed seven clear-cut scoring opportunities.
Meanwhile, Navibank Sai Gon are flying high at the AFC Cup after two wins and one draw, topping Group H.
The team will qualify for the next round if they beat Myanmar's Ayeyawady United, who they beat 4-1 in a one-sided match on April 4. — VNS
