Viet Nam table tennis players were ousted from the Southeast Asian zone qualifiers for the London Olympic after losing to Singaporean rivals in the quarter-finals in Thailand yesterday.
Competing against world No 48 Zhan Jian from Singapore in the men's event, world No 251 Tran Tuan Quynh was defeated 0-4 and will miss out on a London berth this summer. Meanwhile, Nguyen Thi Viet Linh received the same treatment as Quynh, suffering a 0-4 defeat by Singapore's Li Jia Wei in the women's event.
Quynh led group B, beating Indonesia's Ficky Santoso 4-2 and the Philippines' Ting Ledesma 4-0 in the two first matches of the qualification round. He then lost to the host country's Chaitat Chaisit 3-4 in the last match, placing him in second position.
Despite notching a win, Linh lost two matches that placed her second overall in the preliminary round for the women's event. Linh beat Indonesia's Christine Ferliana 4-0 and Malaysia's Ng Sock Khim 4-3 but lost 0-4 to Thailand's Nanthana Komwong.
Singapore's Zhan Jian and Li Jia Wei took first place in the tournament, securing two Olympic berths.
The Viet Nam team have two other opportunities to qualify for the Games, including the Asian zone Olympic qualifying round in Hong Kong on April 19-22 and at the World Olympic play-off round in Qatar on May 10-13.-VNS
