Thien goes down fighting in NZ

Young Vietnamese tennis player Nguyen Hoang Thien lost to Kang Ku-keon of South Korea 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 in the quarter-finals of the New Zealand 18 &Under Summer Championships in Auckland yesterday.

In the third round on Wednesday, 17-year-old Thien came from behind to beat Australian world junior No 538, Robert Allan, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the men's singles event.

Thien also defeated Hong Kong's Li Ming Gang and Japan's Kenta Miyoshi earlier in the tournament.-VNS
