I've heard that there are many tropical parasites one is at risk from in Viet Nam. What can I do to prevent these?
Kevin Bateman, Ha Noi
There are many parasites in tropical areas, but the risk of becoming infected is quite low. You do not need to take any special measures to prevent infection, but food safety and hygiene is important, and try to avoid eating raw fish or vegetables. As for malaria, Viet Nam has reduced its rate of infection significantly. Preventative medicines are readily available at local medical centres across the country, including higher risk areas such as the Central Highlands or border areas.
