HÀ NỘI — The Hà Nội-based Saint Paul Hospital has successfully performed two kidney transplants on Monday, bringing the hospital’s total kidney transplants to 23 since the first operation in December 2013.

The patients are from Thanh Hóa Province and from Phú Thọ Province at ages of 45 and 35 respectively. The two men were diagnosed with chronic kidney failure and were already receiving peritoneal dialysis treatment three times per week. Both patients received kidneys from donors who were not related (not blood relatives).

Kidney functions of the two patients returned to normal 12 hours following the transplants. The two patients are currently in stable health condition, according to hospital director Dr. Nguyễn Đình Hưng.

Following the success of both operations, kidney transplants will be regularly performed at the hospital from now on, Hưng said.

Saint Paul is the first hospital in Hà Nội to successfully perform a kidney transplant in December 2013. Till date, all 23 kidney transplant patients and donors are alive and return to the hospital for regular examinations, according to Hưng.

Việt Nam has successfully performed more than 2,400 kidney transplant surgeries at 18 hospitals and medical facilities nationwide since the first successful kidney transplant at the Military Medical Institute in 1992. — VNS
