HÀ NỘI – The eighth of 18 total patients has died in the recent medical tragedy at northern Hòa Bình Province’s General Hospital.

Nguyễn Thị Bích Nguyên, 46, from Lương Sơn District died yesterday of suspected anaphylactic shock during her kidney dialysis after more than four days struggling in the provincial hospital’s intensive care unit.

According to Dr Hoàng Công Tình, deputy head of the intensive care unit of Hòa Bình General Hospital, Nguyên was moved to the unit in the morning of May 29 in very critical conditions after the medical incident. Thus she could not be transferred to an upper level hospital, such as the Bạch Mai Hospital in Hà Nội.
Despite all efforts from doctors and nurses at the hospital, with appropriate treatment options, the patient’s health status continuously worsened with all of her organs suffering from failure.
The incident, which involved a dialysis mistake, took place on May 29.  Once the deaths of seven people were reported, the provincial General Hospital turned off its dialysis machines and transferred the living patients to Bạch Mai Hospital for emergency treatment. — VNS
