HA NOI (VNS) —Nearly 2,000 people suffered alcohol poisoning during the first three days of New Year celebrations, of which half suffered brain injuries caused by drink-driving, the health ministry has said.

The number of victims is lower than the figure during the previous lunar New Year Festival.

Tran Viet Nga, deputy head of the health ministry's food safety department, said most of the victims suffered methanol poisoning. Methanol is an industrial chemical added to rice wine to enhance profits.

Heavy alcohol poisoning can damage muscle cells and block the kidneys, causing kidney failure.

Severe cases could lead to rhabdomyolysis, a condition involving damage of skeletal muscle tissues that could be fatal if not treated early, she said.

Numerous drinkers have been killed due to this toxic substance.
