SON LA (VNS) — The health ministry today asked Son La Province Health Department to take active measures to prevent bird flu A/H5N6 from spreading to humans in three of the affected areas.

The ministry's Preventive Medicine Department suggested to the province that they strengthen communication activities on how to prevent the spread of the disease from poultry to humans in high risk areas.

The Son La Preventive Department has been asked to work with local authorities to tighten inspection and supervision in efforts to detect suspected cases early and take timely measures to handle outbreaks.

Local hospitals were requested to prepare necessary facilities, equipment and medicine stocks for supervising and treating suspected cases.

The health ministry also recommended regular washing of hands with soap, practising personal hygiene, and avoiding direct contact with bird flu A/H5N6 patients or sick poultry to effectively prevent the disease from spreading to humans. People with symptoms of fever, coughing and breathing difficulties should visit a doctor for an examination and to determine the symptoms.

The move has been initiated after the northern Son La Province yesterday announced that bird flu A/H5N6 was detected in poultry of three households at Lua and Sang hamlets and Hua La Commune of Son La City.

The province reported that more than 300 chickens were ill or had perished due to bird flu A/H5N6 in the area during the past ten days. The province authorities destroyed all the sick chickens and took measures to quarantine and eliminate the disease from spreading to neighbouring areas. — VNS
