The one-hour operation was conducted on a 50-year-old Quảng Nam man who had a large gastric tumour, diagnosed to be stage three cancer.

Dr Pham Nhu Hiệp, who conducted the surgery, said conventional laparoscopic surgeries mostly used 2D flat screen with limited viewing angles and depth.

However, 3D images provide better magnification, and help the surgeons to see lesions inside the body such as in lymph nodes, blood vessels and tumours.

Therefore, the new technique helps to remove the tumours more safely, thoroughly and quickly.

The hospital will train more young technicians in the 3D technology and use the new technique for conducting laparoscopic surgery on other parts of the human body. — VNS
