HCM CITY (VNS)— Officials from the HCM City Department of Transport and other agencies on Friday inspected the Tan Hoa-Lo Gom Canal Sanitation and Urban Upgrade Project as part of efforts to speed up work and complete it by the end of August.

Tan Hoa-Lo Gom is the most polluted canal in the city and one of the main causes of flooding in the western districts, and thus crucial in reducing flooding in the area and improving locals' living conditions.

The project, aimed at mitigating flooding on a 19sq.km area, is originally scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter.

It is expected to benefit around one million residents who are perpetually affected by pollution and flooding, Le Thanh Liem, director of the HCM City Urban Upgrade Project, said.

Speaking to the inspection team, Liem said the works in Districts 6, 11, and Tan Phu are over 70 per cent complete.

After the team made an inspection tour of the project's culvert system, the director of the department, Tat Thanh Cang, called for completion of the project according to the schedule committed to the World Bank, which is funding the project. — VNS
