HCM CITY — Doctors at the HCM City University Medical Centre have successfully performed a liver transplant on a 37-year-old man with liver taken from a brain-dead woman donor from Hà Nội.

On Monday (May 18) the hospital was informed by the National Coordination Centre for Organ Transplantation about the 62-year-old retired teacher who had registered to donate her liver.

She suffers from a critical illness and has been at Việt Đức Hospital in Hà Nội for more than one month.

Her liver was a match for the patient who is being treated for liver fibrosis at the University Medical Centre.

Doctors there have said he has a good chance to recover if he gets a liver transplant.

At 7pm on Monday doctors at the Hà Nội hospital removed the donor’s liver and sent it to HCM City by air.

At 10.15pm doctors at the University Medical Centre received the organ and began the live-saving operation that went on until 5.30am.

The man is in stable condition in the intensive care unit. — VNS
