HÀ NỘI — Nearly 1,000 delegates representing more than 10 million members will gather in Hà Nội on December 11-13 to seek ways to enhance the role of the Việt Nam Farmers’ Union (VNFU) in agricultural development, building new rural areas and modernising farming.

Under the theme ‘Democracy-unity-renovation-integration-development’ the congress is considered an important event for Vietnamese workers and farmers.

The meeting aims to pick an executive board, Chairman and Vice Chairman of the VNFU Central Committee for the seventh tenure and listen to the opinions of farmers’ committees and party committees of provinces and cities on the work of the VNFU and the drafts of some amendments and supplements to the VNFU charter.

During a press briefing on Wednesday in Hà Nội, deputy chairman of the Việt Nam Farmer’s Union Central Committee Nguyễn Hồng Lý said the congress would give participants the chance to review shortcomings exposed in 2013-2018 and learn the future plans of the VNFU.

Lý said remarkable progress had been made over the past years.

A total 457 out of 688 districts and towns nationwide had provided money to the Farmers Supporting Fund.

Nearly 2.2 million members joined the union in 2013-18, raising the number of members to 10.2 million.

Some 130,000 training classes or workshops had been held nationwide to equip farmers with necessary knowledge about farming, forestry and fisheries. About 14,000 models and projects using advanced science and technology in production, processing and preserving agricultural products were also employed. — VNS
