HCM CITY — Five barges were caught illegally mining sand on the Cần Giờ Sea by HCM City’s Long Hoà Town Border Guards on Saturday.

The captains of the barges could not present permits to the guards when confronted.

According to Phạm Long Bào, head of the unit, Captain Bùi Văn Hợp, 38, even tried to pump sand out to get rid of the evidence.

The five barges were carrying a combined 700cu.m of sand and have been seized for further investigation.

On the same day, at the SP-ITC International Container Port in District 9, Nhà Rồng Border Guards found Nguyễn Quốc Anh, 40, a crew member on the Pacific Express, carrying 175 watches labelled Olym Precious.

Anh said that he had bought the watches from Singapore but could not provide a certificate of origin.

He is under arrest pending further inquiries. — VNS
