BÌNH ĐỊNH — Two drivers of Hào Hưng Company were suffocated in the hold of a ship belonging to the Panama-based Uni Fortune firm just around midnight Sunday at Quy Nhơn Port in Quy Nhơn City, Bình Định Province.

According to Lại Huy Hoàng, deputy director of Quy Nhơn Port Company, Nguyễn Việt Hoàng, 41, from Bạc Liêu Province and Nguyễn Văn Ngữ, 31, from Phú Yên, entered the ship’s hold to level woodchips on the hold’s floor.

Seeing Hoàng faint, Ngữ ran to call for help but also passed out on the stairs.

One hour later, a team from Bình Định Province Department of Firefighting and Rescue was sent to help the two victims out but they were both dead. Quy Nhơn Port delivered the victims’ bodies to their hometowns and supported their families with VNĐ10 million (US$430) each.

According to Hoàng, Uni Fortune, having a capacity of 47.000 DWT, has docked at Quy Nhơn Port four times to stock woodchips. The ship has six holds of which four were occupied. Hold No. 2, where the two drivers were killed, was cleaned up and checked for safety before the drivers entered it.
