KON TUM – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuân Phúc wants Ngọc Linh ginseng to become a national brand the country can be proud of.

He was speaking yesterday in central Kon Tum Province, at a conference held on developing the country’s medical herb production.

The Government leader said the ginseng, which is dubbed as a national treasure, could create jobs and contribute to the State budget.

He wanted to know the best way to export the natural health products around the world and believes billions could be made in the future.

Phúc believes these targets are achievable given the high growth rate forecast for the international ginseng market.
He wants fast and organised action to help central provinces of Kon Tum and Quảng Nam implement their ginseng development strategies.
He emphasised the need to raise the values of the ginseng, both economically and medically, protect its purebred gene, and develop a geographical indication for the medicinal herb.
“Popularising Ngọc Linh ginseng does not mean lowering its value, but developing it as a high-end product,” the PM said.
The ginseng (Panax vietnamensis, or Vietnamese ginseng) is a rare medical root containing 52 healthy saponin compounds. It was found on Ngọc Linh Mountain on the boundary between Kon Tum and Quảng Nam in the late 1960s.
Besides saponin, the ginseng contains 17 amino acids, 20 trace minerals and 0.1 per cent of attar. The ginseng has been clinically prove to have high effects on anti-stress and anti-ageing conditions. It helps improve immunity, enhance liver function, and lower cholesterol level. Besides, it also works well with antibiotics and diabetes medications.

Ngọc Linh ginseng is believed to be one of the best in the world. It has been approved as a national product under the Prime Minister’s Decision 787/QD-TTg.
Nine communes in Tu Mơ Râng and Dak Glei Districts of Kon Tum province have received geographical indication certificates for the ginseng which covers a total area of about 400 hectares.
Meanwhile, Quảng Nam Province has also put in place a project on Ngọc Linh ginseng development by 2020 and has another on ginseng preservation by 2030 approved by the Prime Minister. — VNA
