QUẢNG NINH — Local authority is working around the clock to restore power on the northern Cô Tô Island.

The island, a popular tourist destination of Quảng Ninh Province, has lost power after lightning struck transmission lines since Monday.

The incident happened in the early afternoon in Ba Mùn Island, affecting five communes of Vân Đồn District.

The Quảng Ninh Thermal Power Company mobilized more than 100 people to tackle the problem.

It was difficult to restore power due to the transmission lines located in complex terrain, including sea and mountains, as well as poor weather conditions. It was not until late in the afternoon of Tuesday that the five communes had electricity again.

Still, Cô Tô, the furthest island district in the province, has not yet accessed electricity. Power officials are working to inspect the fault detection of electrical equipment. According to the power company, the blackout will last for days.

Cô Tô District People’s Committee has urged locals and businesses to adapt and use backup generators until power is restored. — VNS
