HÀ NỘI  Deputy Prime Minister Trương Hòa Bình has ordered the Ministry of Home Affairs to investigate the quick promotion of the youngest deputy chief of staff of the national anti-smuggling committee.

In a May 23 document of the Government’s Office, Bình asked for a thorough investigation of the career of 34-year-old Vũ Hùng Sơn following media reports. Sơn works at the National Steering Committee Against Smuggling, Trade Fraud and Counterfeit, shortly known as the 389 Committee. The investigation results should be reported to Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc by June 15.

According to the press, Sơn had quite an impressive resume with work experiences in several high-level positions within a short span of time.

From 2009 to 2012, he was the CEO of Bảo Tín Mạnh Hải company specialising in importing luxury cars. He was the deputy editor-in-chief of the Đời Sống & Tiêu Dùng (Life and Consumption) newspaper and the Công Thương (Industry and Trade) magazine owned by the Ministry of Industry and Trade between 2012 and February 2015.

He was then appointed director of the ministry’s Information Centre on Industry and Trade, where he served until October 2015.

Then trade minister Vũ Huy Hoàng, who was stripped of his title for serious wrongdoings in appointing officials, recruited Sơn as his secretary on October 26, 2015, and also let him take charge of the ministry’s office.

Sơn stayed in power for three years, after which he was promoted as the deputy head of the Department of Market Management in January 2018. He was also allowed by the incumbent industry and trade minister Trần Tuấn Anh to work in the 389 Committee.

The committee’s deputy head cum finance minister Đinh Tiến Dũng approved Sơn’s position in the committee this March.  VNS
