ĐỒNG NAI — Over 1,500 tonnes of fish have been found dead in the southern province of Đồng Nai, causing estimated billions of đồng in damages, according to authorities.

Local farmers in Định Quán District found tonnes of dead fish floating on the La Ngà River on Sunday, and so far have not found an appropriate way to solve the situation.

On Monday, fish continued to die, forcing farmers to barter away what was left of their stock for just only VNĐ2,000 to VNĐ8,000 per kg. The dead fish belonged to nearly 120 households in La Ngà and Phú Ngọc communes

On the same day, the Department of Environmental Crime Prevention under Đồng Nai Province’s Police, in collaboration with the provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment investigated the mass fish deaths. The agencies inspected suspicious waste sources discharged from businesses located upstream to where the deaths occurred.

The Đồng Nai Department of Fisheries also took samples of the river water and the dead fish for tests to determine the cause. — VNS
