HÀ NỘI — The State-owned Hà Nội Sewage and Drainage One Member Limited Company said it has released green algae into Hoàn Kiếm Lake to revive the unique green colour of the lake.

Specifically, the company has released 22 tanks of original green algae into the lake. Each tank contained 100 litres of water with green algae.

The water with green algae was pumped out of the lake before it was dredged at the end of last year. It was preserved in the laboratory for rapid growth before being released into the natural environment.

Some scientists said the process would help revive the lake’s typical green colour.

Early this year, the company conducted the dredging of Hoàn Kiếm Lake. Thousands of cubic metres of muddy water were pumped out of the lake, but the water lost its iconic green colour at some places.

Hoàn Kiếm Lake is one of the country’s national heritage sites and top tourist destination with great historical value. The cleanup project will need approval from the culture ministry before it can go ahead. — VNS
