PHÚ YÊN — The Education and Training Department in central Phú Yên Province found at least three high schools with poor infrastructure that threaten the safety of students and staff.

Cao Văn Sự, head of the Planning and Finance Division under the department, said in the past few months, the department had inspected the infrastructure of schools in the province and concluded that degraded infrastructure in three high schools should be fixed urgently.

So far, the department has given the schools some VNĐ3.5 billion (US$154,000) to fix minor problems.

The department, together with the schools, plans to ask for more funds from the provincial People’s Committee to improve school infrastructure.

Trần Tiến Lập, principal of Trần Phú High School in Chí Thạnh Town, one of the three schools, said the school was built 40 years ago.

Dozens of classrooms in the school are unfit for use due to serious degradation, Lập said.

Last year, the province’s People’s Committee approved VNĐ1.5 billion ($66,000) for the school to build new facilities but, so far, the school authorities have only received one fifth of the amount, he said.

Đoàn Nhật Nam, a student of class 12 in the school, said water leaked in his classroom when it rained, adding that students and teachers lived in fear of the room collapsing any moment. — VNS
