HẢI PHÒNG  At least 3,000 chickens infected with avian influenza A/H5N6 virus were culled, Hải Phòng City Department of Livestock and Veterinary said on Thursday.

Phạm Văn Công, the department head, said the infected brood belonged to Mai Văn Tình in Đại Bản Commune, An Dương District. Tình had purchased the brood from the northen province of Thái Nguyên without any certificate of quarantine. After he noticed some of the chickens had died unusually, he buried the dead birds on his own, without informing the local authorities.

After culling the remaining birds in the farm, the department recorded the number of poultry in the area to manage and monitor the epidemic.

According to the Vietnam News Agency, the first outbreak of avian influenza A/H5N6 virus was reported in Đông Hưng and Tây Hưng communes in Tiên Lãng District in January 2015. The virus has made a comeback after three years when the weather is favourable for it to spread. — VNS
