HCM CITY — Police arrested an 18- year-old man on Friday who is suspected in the killing of five members of a family in HCM City’s Bình Tân District and robbed their house.

The bodies of the couple and their three children were discovered in their home on Thursday.

Nguyễn Hữu Tình of An Giang Province was arrested in Long An Province, next to the city.

He was a metalworker in a factory owned by the deceased family.

After allegedly killing them, he stole a number of items from their home, including a motorbike, and fled.

The HCM City police said the murder was a result of a conflict between the suspect and the family.

The victims’ bodies were found by a shipper who had come to the house.

Their neighbours said the family had organised a year-end party on Tuesday afternoon, but they had had no contact with the victims until their bodies were discovered.

The police said they are investigating expeditiously.

On Friday, Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc sent a letter of appreciation to all agencies involved in the case, in recognition of their prompt investigation.

In the letter to the Ministry of Public Security, HCM City People’s Committee, and the HCM City Police, the Prime Minister praised the quick investigation, saying that their actions contributed to the fight against crime and the protection of citizens’ lives. VNS
