ĐÀ NẴNG — The Đà Nẵng City People’s Court on Friday sentenced a man to 18 months behind bars for sending death threats to two high-level city officials.

Đào Tấn Cường, 49, was convicted of texting threats to the phone numbers of Trần Phước Sơn, the deputy chief of staff of Đà Nẵng People’s Committee, and the People’s Committee chairman Huỳnh Đức Thơ, on July 11, 2017. Cường later destroyed the phone and tossed it alongside two SIM cards he used into the Hàn River.

The threats followed a decision signed by Thơ to inspect a land lot stretching thousands of hectares in the Sơn Trà peninsula. Cường was suspicious that it was Sơn who proposed the inspection to Thơ in order to defame him and his brother Đào Tấn Bằng, former chief of staff of Đà Nẵng City Party Committee. — VNS
