HÀ NỘI — Traffic accidents killed 780 people and injured 1,348 others from December 16, 2017, to January 15, 2018, the National Committee for Traffic Safety reported.

There were 1,762 traffic accidents, including 872 crashes and 890 collisions.

“In comparison to the same period last year, the number of accidents has increased by 60 cases (3.53 per cent), deaths by 36 cases (4.84 per cent) and injuries by 170 cases (14.4 per cent),” said Khuất Việt Hùng, vice chairman of the committee.

In February, the committee will implement the Prime Minister’s official order to ensure traffic safety and reduce the number of accidents during Tết (Lunar New Year) holiday and the 2018 Spring Festival in Hà Nội, HCM City and other localities from January 27 to February 10.

A hotline number has been widely circulated in the media to receive citizens’ feedbacks and timely solutions to traffic accidents and congestion during the festive season. The committee will also strengthen its communication campaigns on alcohol concentration limit and quality helmets for motorbike drivers.

The report, issued by the National Committee for Traffic Safety in 2017, showed that there were 20,080 accidents last year, which killed 8,279 people and injured 17,040 others. — VNS
