HCM CITY –  The People’s Committee of HCM City on Tuesday told District 1 authorities to review all parking lots that use parts of street pavements and close nonstandard lots by the end of this quarter.

Pavement use for parking lots will only be allowed in certain areas, while the management of the lots will be assigned to the city’s Volunteer Youth Force, according to the committee.

If companies want to use parking lots on pavements for free, District 1 authorities can provide temporary licences for them.

The People’s Committee has also told District 1 to conduct inspections of licenses granted for 48 parking lots in good locations and operated by bureaus and divisions of the District 1 People’s Committee.

The chairman of the District 1 People’s Committee will work with the city’s Volunteer Youth Force to transfer management of certain parking lots to the force.

Parking lots that adversely affect pedestrians will be terminated.

Pavement sections on many streets in District 1 like Hồ Tùng Mậu, Nguyễn Du and Tôn Đức Thắng are used for parking.

Last year, the city launched a campaign to clear pavements for pedestrians, but use of the pavements by businesses has reoccurred.

The pavements on many streets in districts 1, 3, Bình Thạnh, Gò Vấp and Phú Nhuận are being illegally used for business or parking, according to the Người Lao Động (the Labourer) newspaper.

On a section of Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm Street extending from Lê Duẩn Street to Nguyễn Đình Chiểu Street in District 1, many shops use pavements to park vehicles of their customers.

On a section of Phạm Văn Đồng Street from Bình Lợi Bridge to Nguyễn Thái Sơn roundabout in Gò Vấp and Bình Thạnh districts, most pavements in front of restaurants, eateries and coffee shops are used for parking.
