ĐIỆN BIÊN — An earthquake measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale rocked Điện Biên Đông District in the northwestern province of Điện Biên at 3.14am on Monday.

The quake lasted for some three seconds, according to Nguyễn Thái Sơn, head of the Điện Biên Phủ Seismic Observation Station.

The epicentre was registered at a latitude of 21.409 degrees North and a longitude of 103.309 degrees East, with a depth of some 10km, he said.

The jolt woke up people, who rushed out of their homes in the dark.

There was a small aftershock, but no houses or infrastructure were damaged, Sơn said.

Last year, it recorded seven, most measuring between 2.1 and 3.9 on the Richter scale.
