QUẢNG NINH — A fire broke out last night at the Quảng Ninh Exhibition of Planning and Expo Centre in the northern province of Quảng Ninh, just a night before a local festival scheduled to start today.

The fire started at around 7pm yesterday inside the centre in Hạ Long City’s Hồng Hải Ward. Local firefighters were mobilised to extinguish the blaze but by late last night had been unable to bring the fire under control.

The centre is built on a total area of 62,363 square metres with floor area of 20,678 square metres. It has two buildings resembling the shapes of a mollusk and a giant dolphin. Total investment for the centre was more than VNĐ1.15 trillion (US$51.34 million). The centre was inaugurated on September 30, 2016 after 19 months of construction.

As scheduled, the centre will host a three-day cultural festival of ethnic groups in Quảng Ninh Province, starting today, and introduce and promote products of handicraft villages in the northern area. — VNS
