HÀ NỘI — Northern provinces are expected to receive heavy rain until Tuesday, possibly causing landslides and flash floods according to the National Centre for Hydrometeorogical Forecasting.

Northern mountainous provinces including Quảng Ninh, Lạng Sơn, Thái Nguyên, Bắc Kạn, Cao Bằng, Hà Giang, Tuyên Quang and Lào Cai are on the alert for landslides and flash floods in river-side areas.

Heavy rain, ranging from 150mm to 250 mm, could increase the water volume at reservoirs of hydro-power plants in the region.

On Saturday, the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control asked Sơn La and Hòa Bình hydropower plants to release water from their reservoirs to lower the volume.

Heavy rain during the weekend reportedly caused landslides at two spots on National Highway 3B, blocking traffic from Bắc Kạn City to Chợ Đồn District in the northern province of Bắc Kạn. — VNS
