HCM CITY — The Ministry of Health on Wednesday ordered the HCM City Department of Health to investigate the deaths of two people soon after cosmetic surgeries at private clinics.

In mid-April a 22-year-old woman from Hóc Môn District underwent breast enlargement surgery at Vạn Hạnh Hospital in District 10.

A few days later she was admitted to the Hóc Môn General Hospital with difficulty breathing and low blood pressure.

She was diagnosed with serious post-operative infection and transferred to the 115 People’s Hospital on April 24.

Doctors found her to be 16-17 weeks pregnant and gave her intensive treatment, but she went into a coma and died on May 4.

Lương Ngọc Khuê, head of the ministry’s Medical Examination and Treatment Department, ordered the department to look for possible violations and identify individuals responsible.

The department has also been asked to look into the death of a 53-year-old man who had surgery to remove loose skin in his hips after losing weight at the Việt Thành Cosmetic Surgery Clinic in District 10 last month.

The man, an American, died during the surgery.

The department said it was working with the district’s public security agency to investigate the case.

It has to report back to the Ministry by August 16. — VNS
