Smuggled rhino horns seized at Tân Sơn Nhất Int’l Airport

African rhino horns weighing nearly 4kg were seized at HCM City’s Tân Sơn Nhất International Airport on Wednesday (June 14), the airport customs sub-department has reported.

HCM CITY – African rhino horns weighing nearly 4kg were seized at HCM City’s Tân Sơn Nhất International Airport on June 14, the airport customs sub-department has reported.

Eight horn pieces were discovered in the luggage of two passengers flying from Africa to Việt Nam.

The horns were carefully hidden in personal items such as cookie tins, cosmetic boxes and a ceramic kettle.

The horns, which are from the rare African white rhinoceros, are worth a total of VNĐ8 billion (US$360,000) in the black market, according to customs officers.

The customs office has been working with police to identify people involved in rhino horn smuggling and other smuggling activities.

Since early this year, the city’s investigative division of economic crimes and management discovered 6kg of rhino horns and 10kg of ivory from elephants. – VNS
