HÀ NỘI — Police have apprehended several people across the country for illegal possession and transportation of drugs over the past few days.

Early on Tuesday, the Mộc Châu District police from the northern mountainous province of Sơn La caught a man transporting 32,000 tablets of ecstasy. Widening their investigation, officials also seized three of his accomplices.

The four accused - Phàng A Vư, 25, Phàng A Thái, 27, Phàng A Phua, 21, and Mùa A Chong, 28 - are all residents of the province’s Vân Hồ District.

On the same day, in the central province of Thanh Hóa, the Ngọc Lặc District police caught Lộc Văn Đinh, 48, with more than 600g of heroin and 2.4kg of other drugs in Quan Sơn District.

A few days earlier, on Sunday, the Lạng Sơn Province police caught a man with almost 7kg of heroin. Cà Văn Thuận, 26, admitted that he had been hired to transport the heroin from Thái Nguyên to Lạng Sơn province for a payment of VNĐ50 million (US$2,200).

Meanwhile, courts continue to take a hard line with drug offenders. On Tuesday, the HCM City People’s Court sentenced Hoàng Thị Loan, 40, from the northern city of Hải Phòng, and Phạm Văn Hoàng, 33, from the northern province of Thái Bình, to death for illegal transportation of drugs.

On June 9, 2014, Hoàng landed at the Tân Sơn Nhất International Airport with a box. Loan arrived at the terminal to meet Hoàng, and the duo were caught red-handed as the box changed hands. It contained 2kg of crystal methamphetamine and around 20,000 tablets of ecstasy. Hoàng confessed that he and Loan had got acquainted in the prison in Thanh Hóa Province, and that after release, they had set up a drug transportation ring. — VNS
