HCM CITY — Local people’s committees and Hồ Chí Minh Community youth unions nationwide are organising volunteer campaigns for young people from May 31 to August 31.

In Cần Thơ City in the Mekong Delta, for instance, three campaigns will be carried out: Mùa Hè Xanh (Green Summer), Hoa Phượng Đỏ (Red Flamboyant), and Tiếp Sức Mùa Thi (assistance for candidates in the national high school graduation examination).

The campaigns are expected to attract nearly 50,000 people from the city’s unions, universities and State organisations.

In the Mùa Hè Xanh campaign in Cần Thơ, at least 20 teams of young volunteers will visit farmers’ houses to offer training in advanced farming techniques. Farmers will also learn about the national new rural building programme and protection of water sources.

During the summer, the volunteers in the city will help repair rural streets and irrigation systems, and provide free health exams and medicine to the poor and to people covered by State welfare policies.

The young volunteers in Cần Thơ will also donate blood, which will be stored at a centre and provided to patients during emergencies.

In the Hoa Phượng Đỏ Campaign, young volunteers in the city will provide free meals to the elderly who have no relatives, to heroic mothers and those with financial difficulties.

The Tiếp Sức Mùa Thi Campaign, to be carried out from June 20 to 25 in the city, will ask organisations and individuals to provide free or inexpensive meals and accommodations to eligible candidates.

The volunteers also will help police maintain traffic order in an aim to limit congestion on the streets.

In Tiền Giang Province, members of the Hồ Chí Minh Communist Youth Union plan to hold similar activities in addition to upgrading or building new children’s playgrounds in every district and town in the province.

A forum in the province will also be held for young enterprises and startups to share business experiences.

The Central Committee of the Hồ Chí Minh Communist Youth Union is organising other campaigns for young people in 64 poor districts and islands in the rest of the country, including Cô Tô Island in Quảng Ninh Province, Bạch Long Vỹ in Hải Phòng City and Lý Sơn in Quảng Ngãi Province.

Young volunteers will also do work this summer in Cambodia and Laos. — VNS
