HÀ NAM — Police in northern Hà Nam Province’s Kim Bảng District will investigate a man for allegedly abusing children, head of the district police Lê Văn Tuấn has said.

Đỗ Văn Hưởng, 58, has been put into temporary detention.

The police said on Thursday they had gathered substantial information, evidence and witnesses to charge Hưởng for committing the atrocity upon some students of Đồng Hóa Primary School in Kim Bảng District’s Đồng Hóa Commune where he worked as a security guard.

Earlier, parents of many students of the school filed complaints with local authorities about Hưởng sexually abusing the students.

The school management board has temporarily suspended his work.

The Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs estimates that some 2,000 Vietnamese children face violence and abuse annually, of whom 1,200 suffer sexual abuse. Among these, more than 13 per cent are girls below the age of six. — VNS
