GIA LAI — Four children drowned on Wednesday while swimming in a river in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai.

The victims have been identified as Hoàng Thị Hòa, Võ Ngọc Mỹ, Lê Thị Quỳnh Hương and Lê Thị Minh Thư.

The incident took place around 2.30pm when five girls from Chu Văn An Secondary School went to Ia O Commune’s Sê San River for a swim, said Dương Tuấn Anh, deputy head of police office in Ia Grai District.

Nguyễn Thị Thu Phương, one of the five students who did not swim, said she saw her friends drowning and tried to help them by using a large branch nearby. But she was not successful, Anh said.

The girl then ran to call local residents for help, but it was too late. Many locals joined in the search and finally pulled out the bodies from the river.

The case is under investigation. — VNS
