HÀ NỘI – The Ministry of Industry and Trade on Sunday morning launched the Earth Hour 2017 campaign in Hà Nội, delivering the message, “Lights off to turn on the future”.
The ministry called upon every individual, family, company and organisation to switch off lights and unnecessary electric appliances from 8.30pm to 9.30pm on March 25.
“Turning off lights and appliances for one hour not only reminds us about saving energy, but also aims towards a more important target, which is joining hands to protect the environment and adapt to climate change,” said Phương Hoàng Kim, deputy head of the General Directorate of Energy under the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
“Every small action will bring about big impacts. Every person’s contribution will bring about a green planet,” he said.
This is the ninth year Việt Nam has joined the international community in this meaningful campaign. This year, all 63 provinces and cities nationwide will join the event, hosting a series of activities, such as walking, cycling, along with signing commitments under the sponsorship of Electricity of Việt Nam and Daikin Việt Nam.
Other activities between enterprises and Earth Hour will be held in Hà Nội, Đà Nẵng and HCM City, with a view to call on 2,000 firms to commit to save electricity at factories and production bases.
The highlight will be a switching-off ceremony to be held at Hà Nội’s August Revolutionary Square on the evening of March 25.
This year’s event has attracted the participation of thousands of students at colleges and universities nationwide, as well as Earth Hour ambassadors, including MC Phan Anh, MC Thụy Vân, singer Noo Phước Thịnh and actress Nhã Phương.
An Earth Hour campaign was first held in Việt Nam in 2009. Since then, more than 1,000 businesses and organisations across the country have joined the programme. Last year, up to 451,000 kWh was saved during the event.Earth Hour, organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), is a worldwide grassroots movement uniting people to protect the planet by saving energy. — VNS
