QUẢNG TRỊ — A bomb weighing 266kg was unearthed during site clearance at a construction site in central Quảng Trị Province on Wednesday.

The bomb, 1.7m long and 0.23m in diameter, was found with its original fuse in the province’s Hướng Linh Commune. It was covered with soil at a depth of 2m.

Specialists from Peace Trees Việt Nam arrived at the site to transport the bomb out of the residential area. They later defused the bomb at a designated site in the province.

A specialist said the bomb labelled MK 82 500 LBS, which means Mark 82 bomb, was used by the United States Air Force.

Quảng Trị locality saw the largest number of bombs during the war as it lay on the border separating former North and South Việt Nam. The province also has the highest number of disable peopled from post-war bomb accidents.

In related news, military specialists in northern Yên Bái Province on Wednesday successfully removed a 60kg bomb from a residential area and exploded it safely elsewhere.

The bomb was found in the garden of Đoàn Văn Cơ, a resident in Lương Thịnh Commune, while gardening. The bomb is believed to have been left by the French army and looked to be in good condition.

A total of 56 specialists were mobilised to remove the bomb in an attempt to minimise potential risks as it was found near a kindergarten. — VNS
