BÀ RỊA - VŨNG TÀU – The Vũng Tàu City People’s Court has ordered 11 fish processing plants to pay compensation of VNĐ13.2 billion (US$600,000) to 33 farmers for killing fish they had farmed in cages by discharging wastewater and polluting the Chà Và River.
In September 2015 a large quantity of fish farmed in the river in Long Sơn Commune died, causing losses of more than VNĐ18 billion ($820,000) to their owners.
An investigation by the Việt Nam National University in HCM City’s Institute for Environment and Resources found that 76 per cent of the fish deaths had been caused by wastewater released by 14 fisheries processing plants in Tân Hải Commune.
The pollution began in 1998, the report said.
Before the trial three of the 14 companies voluntarily agreed to pay compensation of around VNĐ300 million ($13,600), but the rest did not.
At the trial from December 14 to 16 the court ordered the remaining 11 companies to pay VNĐ13.2 billion (US$600,000) to the farmers.
One of them has to pay VNĐ3.1 billion ($140,900) while the lowest level of compensation is VNĐ103 million ($4,600).
Each farmer will get between VNĐ50 million ($2,300) and VNĐ2.1 billion ($95,500). – VNS
