JAKARTA — Indonesia yesterday handed over to Việt Nam 39 fishermen who were arrested for illegal fishing in Indonesia’s waters.

They were arrested and detained in Pontianak island in the Kalimantan archipelago of Indonesia two or three months ago. Most are from the central and southern provinces of Việt Nam, including Quảng Ngãi, Bình Định, Bình Thuận, Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu and Kiên Giang.

Twenty-three other Vietnamese fishermen are still detained in Pontianak, and the Indonesians will complete procedures to return them to Việt Nam soon.

Nguyễn Thanh Giang from the Vietnamese Embassy in Indonesia said an additional 31 fishermen would be sent back to Việt Nam in the coming weeks, adding that the embassy will make all-out efforts to bring more Vietnamese fishermen detained in Indonesia home as soon as possible.
