HÀ NỘI — A campaign to ensure environmentally-friendly sanitation at 15 main hospitals in the capital will be launched this Saturday, the Hà Nội Police and municipal Department of Health declared yesterday.

The campaign is being held in response to the joint action programme to protect the environment in Hà Nội during the 2017-25 period. The programme is scheduled to be signed by different organisations including the Hà Nội Police and the Buddhist Sangha of Vietnam.

The 15 hospitals are in the Hoàn Kiếm, Hai Bà Trưng, Đống Đa, Ba Đình and Cầu Giấy districts.

Trần Thị Nhị Hà, deputy director of the Hà Nội Department of Health, said in recent years, the department has conducted a number of activities to protect the environment at hospitals, but inspections show that in many hospitals, smoking in public places still exists, affecting people’s health.

Treatment of garbage is also facing difficulties.

Some hospitals lack the land to set up a green space and rubbish bins, she said.

As part of the campaign, the department will join hands with hospitals, city police departments and local authorities to improve education and raise people’s awareness of ways to keep the environment clean, meting out strict punishments to people caught smoking in hospitals. — VNS
