THÁI BÌNH — Four people were killed and 13 others injured when a steamer suddenly exploded yesterday morning at a seafood processing base in Thái Thụy District of northern Thái Bình Province.

Two women, Bùi Thị Luân, 51, and Lê Thị Búp, 52, died on the spot. Two others, Trần Thị Bé, 50, and Nguyễn Thị Chung, 58, succumbed to severe injuries in hospital.

Neighbours in Thụy Hải Commune heard a huge explosion and screams at about 10am yesterday. The processing base had completely collapsed and the metal sheet roof had blown away due to the blast, Việt Nam News Agency reported.

The steamer was being used to steam shellfish when the incident occurred. The injured told dantri.com.vn that power was cut at that time and they were using an electric generator.

Preliminary investigation revealed the explosion was the result of excessively high pressure inside the steamer due to less water.

Among the 13 injured victims, two were released from hospital, while the condition of the others was still being monitored.

Provincial People’s Committee Chairman Nguyễn Hồng Diên visited the scene yesterday and ordered an investigation. He also visited the families of the deceased and injured.

Each family of the deceased and the injured received VNĐ10 million (US$445) and VNĐ3million ($133) respectively from local authorities.  — VNS
