HÀ TĨNH — A grandmother and her granddaughter drowned yesterday while taking their buffalo to a grassy area near the Đào River in the central Hà Tĩnh Province.

The incident took place at Thạch Hà District’s Thạch Vân Commune at about 3pm.

After watching granddaughter Hoàng Thị Hiền take a false step and slip into the river, Lê Thị Thái, 59, jumped into the water to rescue her. They both, however, drowned, not knowing how to swim in the deep waters.

Also yesterday, a father and his two sons were found drowned in Central Highlands province of Gia Lai’s Chư Prông District.

The victims were identified as Nguyễn Bá Duy, 37, and his twins Nguyễn Bá Thuận and Nguyễn Bá Thắng, 4, who all lived in Ia Vê Commune.

Duy’s wife went back to her homeland in Bình Định Province last Friday. When she returned home on Sunday, she couldn’t find her husband and sons. She then informed local authorities.

Nguyễn Báu, head of Ia Vê Commune’s Police station, said relevant agencies and local residents had worked together to search for the victims. Yesterday morning, the dead bodies were found at a pond only 1km from their house.

The cause of the incident is under investigation. — VNS
