PHÚ YÊN – The People’s Court of the central Phú Yên Province yesterday sentenced to prison 15 former leaders and executive officials of Đông Hòa Distict for violating state regulations on economic management.

Former chairman of the district’s People’s Committee Nguyễn Tài, former director of the district’s Land Fund Development Centre Nguyễn Kích and the centre’s former deputy director Huỳnh Ngọc Thắng were sentenced 12 years, 10 years and four years in prison, respectively. Former head of the district’s Natural Resources and Environment Office Nguyễn Kỳ Tổng and former chairman of Hòa Tâm Commune’s People’s Committee Lê Văn Hoàng were sentenced to 30-month imprisonment.

These ex-officials and leaders failed to abide by state regulations in conducting compensation, land clearance and resettlement for the construction of the Vũng Rô Refinery in Hòa Tâm Commune between July 2013 and April 2014.

Their violation led to a loss of VNĐ9.2 billion (US$412,000) for the state budget, according to the court’s indictment.

Others involved in the case received prison terms of between 18 months and two years. – VNS
