BẾN TRE – The People’s Committee of Bến Tre Province has asked the government to buy 92,000 tonnes of salt in stock in Bình Đại and Ba Tri districts.

More than 100,000 tonnes of salt were produced in 2015-2016, but only 8,000 tonnes have been sold.

Even though it was a productive salt season, farmers were not able to sell their products, even at the low price of VNĐ200,000 – VNĐ250,000 per kilo.

Nguyễn Thị Thi from Ba Tri District told Dân Trí that due to low demand nine out of 10 farmers could not sell their salt. Many had to take on other work to earn money to support their families.

Bến Tre has 2,000 households and more than 4,000 salt farmers. – VNS
