NGHỆ AN — Nghệ An central province authorities are investigating the death of a gayal or wild oxen  in a protected forest in Vĩnh Sơn Commune, Anh Sơn District.

Nguyễn Hữu Thanh, head of the Vĩnh Sơn Commune Police, said local residents discovered the bull’s dead body at 3pm on Thursday while they were harvesting honey in the forest.

The animal weighs more than one tonne. Its dead body is disintegrating. Authorities took samples of its head and gall bladder for investigation and research.

Thanh said the forest once had eight gayals and now it only has about three to five.

The gayal is a rare and endangered species and is listed in the Việt Nam Red Book. — VNS
