HCM CITY — More than one-third of children in Asia have flat feet and Vietnamese children are no exception, according to the founder of the American Chiropractic Clinic in Việt Nam.

Speaking Tuesday at a ceremony to launch his third clinic in HCM City’s District 5, Dr Wade Brackenbury said that parents should be aware of their children’s complaints about foot pain and fatigue.

Flat feet can cause knee arthritis and back pain later in life if left untreated.

It can affect the child’s posture and interfere with running and walking, Brackenbury said.

Flat feet tend to turn in, which affects the rest of the foot.

The most effective treatment for flat feet is orthotic therapy, he said.

To work effectively, orthotics need to be made individually from a mold or scan of the child’s foot and prescribed by a doctor specialising in foot treatment.

Foot orthotics are inserts manufactured by hand and placed in shoes to improve the body’s balance, posture and overall alignment.

The best time to treat flat feet is between the ages of three to seven.— VNS
