PHÚ YÊN — Three people in the south-central province of Phú Yên were killed, when a mortar shell they attempted to cut open to extract gun powder and scrap exploded, on Saturday afternoon.

Local officials said the three men had earlier found the bomb in a local river. They hid the bomb and decided to cut it open with a saw on Saturday to collect the gun powder for fishing.

Ksor Y Ven, 24, and Ksor Y Thắng, 22, died on the spot, while Kpa Y Long, 16, died on the way to the hospital.

Unexploded ordnance left from the war has been the reason for many explosions, which occur every day, in central provinces.

Such explosions kill more than 1,500 people every year and injure 2,200 more. — VNS
