ĐẤK LẮK – A young man has committed suicide when he detonated a home-made grenade in Buôn Ma Thuột City, in the Central Highlands province of Đắk Lắk.

Initial investigations from the city police on Monday revealed that the victim was Nguyễn Văn Minh, 30, a father of two, living at Buôn Triết Commune, Lắk District of the province.

The cause of the suicide was a conflict with his wife. He was madly in love with her and did not like her going to work in the city.

The owner of a hostel at Ngô Gia Tự Street said the victim and his wife took a room on rent at 6p.m. He later heard them quarrelling in the room.

Some witnesses said that before the accident they had seen this man leaving the hostel. He screamed “grenade” and threw a beer can-shaped black object into the street, a local resident said.

Although, the object did not explode, the crowd at the three-way crossroad panicked.

Then, Minh flung the grenade into the lorry lane on the street. At that moment, a lorry arrived there and drove over the grenade, causing a huge explosion with high columns of smoke.

“I shouted a warning but it was not enough to prevent the lorry from stopping before it drove over the grenade. I and some passers-by quickly fell to the ground,” a witness said. “The victim was flung as far away as 10m from the blast site.”

The lorry, however, suffered no damage except a puncture.

The city police came to the scene immediately and defused another detonator still on the victim’s body.

Investigation is still underway.—VNS
