THỪA THIÊN - HUẾ — A whirlwind swept across central Thừa Thiên-Huế Province late on Sunday afternoon, blowing the roofs off 50 houses.

No fatalities were reported. Two people were hospitalised for injuries attributed to doors slamming in the strong wind.

The whirlwind passed through the province’s Phong Hiền Commune in 10 minutes, damaging another 270 houses and buildings. It also damaged and uprooted many trees and ruined crops.

Nguyeãn Vaên Cöï, a local resident, said the strong wind had picked up quickly but had not lasted long. It was said to have been accompanied by torrential rain and hail.

The incident, however, brought good news for adjacent communes, as their thirsty rice paddy fields were fully watered. — VNS
